A Hap-hap-happenin' New Year!
Guess who made it to 2008...
That's right people! Somehow I managed to survive the most orangey-smelling squat party I've ever been to!
It all started around 7pm on New Year's Eve, where my flatmate Hussein and I sat frantically on our laptops with Hallucinagen (that's psytrance to those who don't know) pounding out, getting us in the mood for a night of glowsticks and UV paint. We'd originally planned to go to Rumbleteaser, which was held in a secret location, yet our registration didn't work and the phone line was down. So, instead we decided at 10:30pm to pick up our asses and a can of Carlsberg and to hop on a train to an N11 postcode at World of Leather. At least one party hotline was working that night... An event called Nomad which was held in World of Leather...
Midnight struck and the fireworks went off the second our train passed the London eye, so we got full view and it was fantastic. These huge explosions that looked like glitter in a snow globe, bursting in to the sky. For the first time I think I've ever seen in the smoke... People were talking to each other ON THE TRAIN, wishing a happy new year.
Ok, fast forward past the tube... We're walking past a mega busy road and catch up with a bunch of people ahead of us who are carrying hoolahoops and who mostly seem to be wearing funny hats and customised clothing. I felt under-dressed...
We got to World of Leather to find nothing on, yet we followed the hippies and the trail of marijuana smoke to find ourselves at another 'venue' (I say this in the loosest of terms, there was no water in the women's toilets after all) and upstairs at the event which was originally to be held in Zone 1... Rumbleteaser!
I hadn't been to anything like this before. This scene is always so unique, open-minded and friendly (once you learn how to judge who is sober enough to talk to), even if it does smell a bit funny.
There were live acts on all night, from DJs to World Music and one band who sounded kind of like a mixture of Morrocan, Congolese and Irish mashed together. We talked to different people and I experimented with a legal high... Something which I never plan on doing again.
The next day we ended up home at 11am shattered. I had difficulty sleeping much of the next day, but as soon as I was up on Wednesday it was back to the library for me. Torn mournfully away from the incense, pretty lights and fancy dress and thrown back in to the world of London buses, university assignments and personal hygene. Still... Roll on next event, where will it be?
Oh... And naturally, I have a couple of photos from the event (that I nicked from my flatmate's facebook. Hehe!)

Back in Wales
So I'm back in Wales where it's cold, mountainous and where people appear to be almost perpetually rat-arsed on Fosters or the cheapest cider going. It's very different to Kingston. The countryside here is unkept, the people say what they think of you and it's far more hostile to anything different, yet warm and protective if you're considered one of them. I swore I'd never go back a couple of years ago... But here I am now, procrastinating my studies, shivering under my quilt (is it me, or is everywhere cold at the moment???) and almost looking forward to socialising later in the day.
It's nice also, to have quiet next door neighbours who you don't feel are spying on you and the company of my brother. Still, it probably won't be long until the novelty wears off and I want to go back to London again, where I can dress how I want, be who I want and where people actually know what the word 'vegan' means.

Sel's videos of the month!
From the march we attended!
Martha Tilston actually played this in the Synergy Centre after the march. She's absolutely incredible.
One of the best music videos... Like evar!
Seriously... If mushies really did this, I'd be trippn' all day long baby!
November and Decemberrrr - What I've been up to
So I haven't posted for like... A month. However, I've found friends posting on blogspot and am wondering if there's a way I can link to the like on Livejournal.
Any help would be mucho appreciated. ^_^
So as usual I've been a busy bee and I have a shitload of work to do over the Christmas period which thankfully, I'm doing rather well with. Final year is like that however and it's something which annoys me. I wish I had the drive and confidence to do the things in second year that I've done in third. Still, I've had an active month or so and here are a few of the things I've been up to:
14th November - A CCC meeting! I guess that anybody who has been to these know how motivated you feel when you walk out at the end. Six hundred people in a room and speakers who explain climate change in a way that somehow makes sense... And who put arguments across which make sense. Climate change seems less scary when you're amongst people who understand to an extent what's going on and who want to make changes. You feel less like you're standing looking up at a mountain and more like you've started to climb it.
16th - 18th November - Shared Planet! Yeah, it was Ok... Though less inspiring than I'd hoped and I felt a bit alienated at times. Don't get me wrong, it's lovely and friendly, but I didn't feel like I fitted in. Perhaps because so many people seemed to come from a different pedigree to me, or maybe because there didn't seem to be any people from universities like mine... Most seemed to be from the bigger more prestigious institutions. I wasn't especially moved by the speakers, with the exception of the Burmese lady who was talking about her country. However, despite the few complaints I had about Shared Planet, I did enjoy it and loved the workshops they had to offer. I think then, a three out of five.
29th November - KUSU AGM! No... Really... What a dire turn out. As much as I'm considering running next year, it is entirely for the purpose of running effective campaigns and whatnot... But despite there being lectures going on, we had less than one hundred out of nineteen thousand turn up. That's depressing, no?
6th December - Black Gold screening in CSAIPE! I was worried nobody would turn up, but it went Ok! And we even got some people from the trade justice movement to talk. I hope to organise another next year, perhaps focussing on environmental justice.
8th December - Climate change demo and after party at the Synergy Centre! It was pissing ice, but around six thousand people still marched to pressurise the government in to taking responsibility for climate change. Do I believe in people power? Why yes I do and I plan to write about that some time in the future. The Synergy Centre was sweet as always.
9th December - A nice quiet 24th birthday for me and an opportunity to rest without the guilt that I have to be studying.
12th December - Work Xmas dinner! We went to Monty's Nepalese restaurant (and you're probably questioning, as I did how Nepali a guy called 'Monty' can be) and I just so happened to be the token white girl! The food was great and we played tiddlywinks frogs, or whatever it was called.
Anyway, check the entry above for some pictures of previous events and of course, Sel's music videos of the month!
